There are a lot of misconceptions about hypnosis. Many people believe that they are supposed to be completely unconscious and have no memory of what’s going on and if they don’t get there, it’s not working and they come to the conclusion that they can’t be hypnotized. The truth is that hypnosis is really the place between awake and asleep. It’s a trance like state where individuals are highly suggestable and highly relaxed. If you’ve ever been driving your car and you are just hyper focused on the road and nothing else and it seems as though your conscious mind has shut down and your subconscious mind is steering the wheel and you don’t remember just how you got to your destination, then you’ve experienced a trance like state.

Many people fear that a hypnotist will make you do foolish things. I’ve been asked on many occasions, “You aren’t going to make me cluck like a chicken are you?” I always say, ‘You aren’t going to do anything you don’t want to do, or wouldn’t normally do.’ You never hear a legal defense for murder as, not criminally responsible, because the defendant was under hypnosis. If you wouldn’t kill someone when you’re awake, you won’t do it under hypnosis. If, when you’re awake,  you don’t cluck like a chicken, when you hear a bell ring, you probably won’t do it if a hypnotist tells you to. While it is true that you are more suggestible, you are also fully aware of what’s going on. Suggestible doesn’t mean you become a zombie and you’re at the mercy of your hypnotist. It means that your mind is more malleable in this state and easier to influence. It doesn’t mean you’ve surrendered control over to someone else. One of the first things they tell you in hypnosis school is that stage hypnosis isn’t real.

Hypnosis really is the state between being awake and being asleep.  Studies have shown that the left side of the brain shuts down and the right side takes over, suggesting that our conscious mind takes a nap, so to speak, while we engage the subconscious mind.  Our subconscious mind is kind of where we store things, like – you don’t keep, ‘how to drive a car,’ in your conscious mind – you store that in your subconscious mind – this is why your conscious mind is able to turn off when you are performing this particular task sometimes.  Our subconscious mind is also where we store a lot of deep seeded beliefs about ourselves, things we’ve carried with us from childhood, so when you’re at the right frequency, we can shut down our conscious mind and access our subconscious mind and try to shake off some of those beliefs that no longer serve us.

There are also different levels of hypnosis. In some cases patients who are allergic to anesthesia have had to have a hypnotist put them into a deep trance, while their dentists perform otherwise painful surgeries. In this scenario the hypnotist is able to convince the patient that they weren’t feeling any pain.

There 4 Brain Wave Frequencies:

Beta waves occur when you are fully awake and engaged with your environment.

Alpha waves occur when you are feeling relaxed (hypnosis can occur in this state).

Theta waves occur when you are slightly more relaxed. There is less activity in the left hemisphere of the brain, while the right (creative side) is more active. This is the state you generally want to get to during hypnosis.

Delta waves occur when you have drifted off, right before REM sleep. Here you are no longer awake or aware of your environment.

Many people do fall asleep during a hypnosis session. Unfortunately, there does have to be some awareness for the suggestions of the hypnotist to sink in. So if you fall asleep the messages aren’t sneaking in there somehow.

I’ve been asked repeatedly to put out a hypnosis video. It has taken me a long time to put it together, so I apologize for the delay, but this week I thought it would be fun to add another tool to our healing box. I love the script that I’m using in this session. It focuses on taking charge of your life, getting rid of unwanted feelings, fears, habits, objects and people that complicate our lives. It’s about creating the life that you want. It guides you to your true essence, then asks you to rid yourself of anything unwanted or unhealthy and to choose what you take with you on your journey forward. If nothing else, I promise by the end of it you will be relaxed and feeling pretty good.

It’s a bit lengthy, over 20 minutes, so it’s probably not something you’ll want to listen to in your office. When you have some time this week, preferably before bed, or you’re in need of some relaxation, then get comfortable, dim the lights and get ready to explore the power of your mind.

*Note: I do want to apologize for the sound quality. While I do have many friends with home studios and who are in media, trying to hook up with them at this time of year was impossible, so everything you’re about to hear and see was done by me.  This week I learned how to use a Zoom recorder, download files onto my computer, create a video, create a Youtube channel and download a video, so I’m pretty proud of myself. It’s not perfect, but if I don’t stress out about perfect anymore. If I would have waited for perfect it wouldn’t be done, so without further ado – here is my first hypnosis video.
